President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Justice Paul Kwadwo Baffoe-Bonnie as the 16th Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana at a ceremony held at the Jubilee House in Accra. The respected jurist, who had been serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, officially assumed the role after taking the Oath of Allegiance, the Judicial Oath, and the Oath of Secrecy administered by the President.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s elevation follows the approval of Parliament on November 13, 2025, after his nomination was submitted in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution. His appointment comes in the wake of the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, who was dismissed following recommendations by a constitutional committee that investigated allegations of stated misbehavior against her.
Speaking during the ceremony, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the independence of the judiciary. He emphasized that judicial independence is a constitutional obligation and not a privilege granted by the Executive. The President urged the newly sworn-in Chief Justice to lead reforms that will promote integrity, discipline, fairness, and efficiency within the justice system. He also assured the judiciary of his government’s support in strengthening institutions, modernizing court infrastructure, and resourcing the justice delivery system to serve Ghanaians more effectively.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, known for his intellectual depth and long service on the Bench, has risen through all levels of Ghana’s judicial structure—from the High Court to the Court of Appeal and ultimately the Supreme Court. His extensive experience and reputation for fairness were key factors noted by the Presidency in the decision to nominate him as Ghana’s next Chief Justice.
With his swearing-in, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie now assumes full leadership of the Judiciary at a time when calls for reforms, transparency, and stronger public trust continue to echo across the country. His tenure is expected to focus on strengthening institutional integrity and enhancing access to justice for all citizens.
