ZM NEWS STORY:In a major breakthrough for Ghanaโs health sector, the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced concrete steps to clear the backlog of unpaid salaries and address recruitment delays that have plagued health workers for years.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Ministry of Health, Hon. Akandoh revealed that the Ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, has made significant progress toward resolving the long-standing salary issues affecting thousands of medical
professionals nationwide.According to the Minister, 883 medical house officers who began work in 2024 without pay have now been placed on salary, while clearance has been secured for 203 doctors who were employed late last year.
Additionally, approval has been granted for the recruitment of 800 doctors who completed their housemanship in 2024 and were awaiting placement.Hon.
Akandoh further disclosed that 321 pharmacists who completed their housemanship early in 2024 have received their allowances, while 15,755 rotation nurses and midwives, along with 2,154 allied health interns, will begin receiving their unpaid allowances starting next month.
Touching on the case of 13,500 nurses and midwives whose financial clearance expired before postings, the Minister confirmed that over 7,000 have already been paid, with clearance obtained for the remaining 6,500, set to be processed immediately.He reaffirmed the governmentโs commitment to ensuring that all affected health workers are duly compensated and assured that measures are being put in place to prevent such administrative lapses in the future.
