The office of the Attorney‑General’s Office is now reviewing the case dossier against Alexander Afenyo‑Markin, Minority Leader and MP for Effutu, following allegations of assault during a high-profile protest.
According to Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem‑Sai, the case docket titled “The Republic v. Alexander Afenyo-Markin” has been formally submitted to the AG’s Office, where it will undergo prosecutorial review and a decision will be made whether to prosecute.
On Monday, 5 May 2025, during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration outside Parliament House, an altercation is alleged to have occurred involving Afenyo-Markin and a uniformed police officer at the entrance of the parliamentary complex.
Video footage — reviewed by the Ghana Police Service — appears to show Afenyo-Markin becoming visibly agitated while attempting to move past a barrier, and then an altercation ensued with the officer.
In response, Afenyo-Markin filed his own complaint naming the officer (Constable Forson) and alleging he was struck in the chest while trying to submit a protest petition. The Police subsequently invited both him and the officer for investigation.
With the dossier now at the AG’s Office, the prosecutorial team will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to charge Afenyo-Markin formally. No final decision has yet been publicly announced.
