Plan International Ghana, in partnership with the Government of Canada, NETRIGHT Ghana, and the African Youth and Adolescent Network (AfriYAn), has officially launched the Renewed Women’s Voice and Leadership – Ghana (RWVLG) project — a major initiative aimed at strengthening women’s rights organisations, amplifying women’s leadership, and promoting gender equality across the country.
The multi-year project, funded by Global Affairs Canada, builds on the gains of the previous Women’s Voice and Leadership (WVL) programme implemented from 2019 to 2024. The renewed phase expands support for women’s rights organisations (WROs), young women’s groups, and feminist movements working to challenge gender-based discrimination, increase women’s participation in decision-making, and influence policies that advance gender equality.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Constant Tchona, Country Director of Plan International Ghana, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to advancing a feminist and gender-transformative agenda that ensures women and girls can exercise their rights fully and equally.
“This renewed phase strengthens our resolve to support women’s organisations, build sustainable leadership pipelines, and amplify the voices of women and girls in national development,” he said. “Through strong partnerships, we are ensuring that advocacy for gender equality becomes louder, more coordinated, and more impactful.”
Representatives from NETRIGHT Ghana and AfriYAn highlighted the importance of inclusive leadership, especially involving young women and adolescent girls in national dialogues. They emphasized that the RWVLG project will boost capacity building, advocacy, mentorship, and long-term institutional strengthening for women’s groups across all regions.
The Government of Canada, represented through Global Affairs Canada, described Ghana as a key partner in promoting women’s rights and emphasized that sustained investment in gender equality remains central to Canada’s international development priorities.
The RWVLG project will provide technical and financial support to women-led and feminist organisations, promote policy advocacy, and enhance collaboration between civil society, youth networks, and gender equality activists. Over the coming years, the programme aims to expand the reach of women’s rights movements, improve leadership opportunities for young women, and create enabling environments where women and girls can thrive.
