Asenso-Boakye Appeals to President Mahama to Halt “Wasteful” Kumasi Expressway Project

Bantama Member of Parliament and former Minister of Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has formally written to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to stop the construction of the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway, describing the project as “wasteful.”

In his letter, Asenso-Boakye argues that the government’s plan to build a new six-lane expressway would undermine significant progress already made on the existing Accra–Kumasi dual carriageway project. According to the former minister, over 100 kilometers of the current highway have been completed, with an additional 46 kilometers under construction. Abandoning this work, he notes, would amount to unnecessary wastage of public resources.

Asenso-Boakye further cautioned that the proposed expressway lacks crucial preparatory work, including detailed designs, feasibility studies, and cost estimations, yet the government had publicly announced its intention to begin construction. He emphasized that completing the ongoing dualisation project should be prioritized before embarking on a completely new expressway.

Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson confirmed the letter, highlighting Asenso-Boakye’s concern that the new project could result in inefficiencies and excessive expenditure, diverting funds from the existing infrastructure project that is near completion.

The Accra–Kumasi Expressway proposal is still under consideration, with feasibility studies and funding plans reportedly ongoing. The government has yet to officially respond to Asenso-Boakye’s appeal.

This development reflects broader concerns among some lawmakers and stakeholders about resource allocation and project prioritization in Ghana’s road infrastructure planning.
