President Mahama this afternoon formally inaugurated the newly-constituted Hajj Board, with Alhaji Ibrahim Tanko at its helm. The ceremony marked the government’s renewed commitment to enhancing the planning and execution of Ghana’s annual pilgrimage.
In his address, President Mahama emphasised that the Board’s work was “a public trust” and not merely an administrative exercise. He said the Ministry and the Board must begin preparations for the next Hajj immediately, ensure that schedules, registration procedures and cost structures are announced early to bring certainty to prospective pilgrims.
He reiterated that transparency and accountability are fundamental. “Pilgrims and their families must know how their money is used. Trust is the currency of leadership,” he declared, warning against unofficial levies and hidden charges, and instructing that all payments must pass through traceable and approved channels.
President Mahama further underscored that the safety, health and welfare of pilgrims — especially the elderly, women and persons with disabilities — are a sacred responsibility. He called on the Board to coordinate closely with the Ghana Health Service, the Ministry of Transport and Ghana’s Embassy in Riyadh so that pilgrims travel safely, receive decent accommodation, sufficient meals and appropriate medical care. He disclosed that the presence on the Board of a heart surgeon would strengthen medical preparedness for this category of pilgrims.
Turning to innovation, the President tasked the Board with developing a Hajj-mobile application to allow pilgrims to register, verify their status, track payments and access travel information. He said digitisation would help reduce fraud, ease congestion and improve long-term data planning.
He concluded by calling for constant engagement with the Office of the National Chief Imam, regional imams, travel agents and Saudi authorities, stating that “coordination prevents crisis and communication prevents rumours.” He expressed confidence that the new Board would deliver a more transparent, efficient and dignified Hajj experience for Ghanaian pilgrims.
The Board’s inauguration signals a fresh start for Ghana’s pilgrimage operations, and the President’s message set high expectations for integrity, modernisation and inclusivity in the coming season.
