Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has referred the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to the Privileges Committee for alleged contempt of Parliament.
The referral follows a formal complaint from Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who accused Afenyo-Markin of defying a parliamentary resolution that removed him from Ghana’s delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament.
According to the complaint, Parliament had officially reconstituted Ghana’s ECOWAS Parliament delegation, excluding Afenyo-Markin. However, despite this decision, he reportedly travelled to Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and participated in an ECOWAS Parliamentary session—an action described as a direct breach of Parliament’s authority and a violation of its directives.
Delivering his ruling on the matter, Speaker Bagbin stated that a prima facie case of contempt had been established. He therefore directed the Privileges Committee to investigate the conduct of the Minority Leader and report its findings to the House.
The committee’s inquiry will determine whether Afenyo-Markin’s actions constitute contempt of Parliament and recommend the appropriate sanctions if necessary.
This development adds a new layer of tension to the ongoing disagreement over Ghana’s representation at the ECOWAS Parliament and the enforcement of parliamentary decisions.
